Demokratie zum Mitmachen: Café der Stimmen ("Demokratie-Café")
"Demokratie-Café" is a regular, informal meeting format open to all community members, especially migrants, young people, and those less familiar with civic tools. It takes place once a month in public places such as cafés, libraries or youth centers in Germany. Participants share local concerns, ask questions about civic rights and learn how to influence local decisions (e.g., petitions, contacting local councils, joining dialogues). The idea was born in Leipzig in 2024 as a grassroots response to integration and low political engagement. The meetings are free, low-barrier, and moderated by volunteers. Each event ends with a small “democratic action”: writing a letter, inviting a local politician, or creating a flyer in multiple languages."
“Кафе демократії” — це регулярна неформальна зустріч, відкрита для всіх мешканців громади, зокрема мігрантів, молоді та тих, хто раніше не брав участі в суспільному житті. Раз на місяць люди збираються у публічному просторі (кав’ярня, бібліотека, молодіжний центр), щоб ділитися проблемами, обговорювати місцеві питання та дізнаватися, як вони можуть впливати на прийняття рішень (наприклад: подати звернення, зв’язатися з радою, долучитися до обговорення). Ініціатива виникла у Лейпцигу у 2024 році як відповідь на потребу в інтеграції та знижену участь у місцевих процесах. Формат — вільний, безкоштовний, модерується волонтерами. Кожна зустріч завершується малою демократичною дією — листом, петицією, флаєром чи запрошенням депутата."

Hackathon - Innovative developer meeting
A hackathon is an event format in which people with different skills - for example from IT, design, education or civil society - work together in a short space of time to find creative solutions to specific challenges. Ideas are developed in teams, prototypes are built and tested directly. The aim is to promote innovation, dialogue and shared learning - often with a social or digital focus.
Ein Hackathon ist ein Veranstaltungsformat, bei dem Menschen mit unterschiedlichen Fähigkeiten – etwa aus IT, Design, Bildung oder Zivilgesellschaft – innerhalb kurzer Zeit gemeinsam an kreativen Lösungen für konkrete Herausforderungen arbeiten. In Teams werden Ideen entwickelt, Prototypen gebaut und direkt erprobt. Ziel ist es, Innovation, Austausch und gemeinsames Lernen zu fördern – oft mit gesellschaftlichem oder digitalem Fokus.

Barcamp - More than just a conference
A barcamp is an open and participatory event format in which the participants are also co-organisers. In contrast to traditional conferences, there is no predetermined agenda - the programme is created on the day of the event itself based on suggestions from the participants. Anyone can contribute a topic, offer a session or actively participate in discussions.
Barcamps promote the open exchange of ideas, knowledge and experiences. They are particularly suitable for civil society, creative or digital projects. The focus is often on collaboration, diversity and democratic dialogue.
Ein Barcamp ist ein offenes und partizipatives Veranstaltungsformat, bei dem die Teilnehmenden zugleich Mitgestaltende sind. Im Gegensatz zu klassischen Konferenzen gibt es keine vorher festgelegte Agenda – das Programm entsteht am Veranstaltungstag selbst durch Vorschläge aus dem Kreis der Teilnehmenden. Jede*r kann ein Thema einbringen, eine Session anbieten oder sich aktiv an Diskussionen beteiligen.
Barcamps fördern den offenen Austausch von Ideen, Wissen und Erfahrungen. Sie eignen sich besonders für zivilgesellschaftliche, kreative oder digitale Projekte. Im Fokus stehen hierbei oft Zusammenarbeit, Vielfalt und demokratischer Dialog.

Sprachen und Stimmen - Sichtbarkeit für sprachliche Minderheiten in Europa
Die Wanderausstellung des Zenter fir d’Lëtzebuerger Sprooch (ZLS) wurde mit dem Ziel entwickelt, die luxemburgische Sprache und deren gesellschaftliche Rolle sichtbarer zu machen. Auf interaktive und kreative Weise wird die Sprache nicht nur als Kommunikationsmittel, sondern als Ausdruck kultureller Identität, Geschichte und demokratischer Teilhabe dargestellt.
Die Ausstellung „Die luxemburgische(n) Sprache(n)“ lädt Besucher*innen dazu ein, sich mit Sprache und Sprachen auseinanderzusetzen. Der Titel ist bewusst mehrdeutig gewählt und spiegelt die komplexe Sprachsituation in Luxemburg wider.
Die Ausstellung behandelt unter anderem folgende Themen: Mehrsprachigkeit, Sprachvarianten, historische Aspekte, Sprachwandel sowie die Rolle der luxemburgischen Sprache in Literatur und Medien. Konkret werden in drei Modulen folgende Schwerpunkte gesetzt:

Wie entsteht eine Sprache?
Die Ausstellung kombiniert audiovisuelle Inhalte mit interaktiven Elementen, die es den Besucher*innen ermöglichen, über ihr Smartphone aktiv teilzunehmen.
Basierend auf diesem Ansatz schlägt das Projekt eine europaweite Erweiterung vor, in der auch andere Minderheitensprachen – wie Baskisch, Bretonisch, Sorbisch, Rätoromanisch, Ladinisch, Friesisch oder Samisch – über ähnliche Formate präsentiert werden. Die Ausstellung kann so als Bildungs- und Dialoginstrument für eine mehrsprachige, inklusive und demokratische Gesellschaft dienen.

As part of the ViMA Danube project and the Green Week in Ulm, an international photo competition titled “Show Us the ‘Green’ in Your City” was launched in 2023. The competition invited participants from different countries to explore and highlight green spaces in their cities or communities. The objective was to raise awareness about environmental protection, urban nature, and sustainable ways of living in European and Danube region cities.
Im Rahmen des ViMA-Danube-Projekts und der Grünen Woche in Ulm wurde im Jahr 2023 ein internationaler Fotowettbewerb mit dem Titel "Zeig uns das 'Grün' in deiner Stadt" gestartet. Der Wettbewerb lud Teilnehmer aus verschiedenen Ländern ein, Grünflächen in ihren Städten oder Gemeinden zu erkunden und hervorzuheben. Ziel war es, das Bewusstsein für Umweltschutz, Stadtnatur und nachhaltige Lebensweisen in den Städten Europas und des Donauraums zu schärfen.

Competitions on European heritage
As part of the "Traces of Europe in My Town" project, teenagers and young adults from various European countries were invited to discover and creatively document European traces in their own town or region. They were able to pick up on aspects such as architecture, monuments, history, street names, art or personal stories that make Europe visible at a local level.
Participants submitted their contributions in the form of photos, videos, interviews or texts. The best entries were honoured and published on the danect.eu platform. The project has helped to raise awareness of European diversity and shared history - right where young people live and work.
Im Rahmen des Projekts „Traces of Europe in My Town“ waren Jugendliche und junge Erwachsene aus verschiedenen europäischen Ländern eingeladen worden, europäische Spuren in ihrer eigenen Stadt oder Region zu entdecken und kreativ zu dokumentieren. Dabei konnten sie Aspekte wie Architektur, Denkmäler, Geschichte, Straßennamen, Kunst oder persönliche Geschichten aufgreifen, die Europa auf lokaler Ebene sichtbar machen.
Die Teilnehmenden reichten ihre Beiträge in Form von Fotos, Videos, Interviews oder Texten ein. Die besten Einsendungen wurden prämiert und auf der Plattform danect.eu veröffentlicht. Das Projekt hat dazu beigetragen, das Bewusstsein für die europäische Vielfalt und gemeinsame Geschichte zu stärken – genau dort, wo junge Menschen leben und wirken.

Student Exchange Programs promote intercultural learning, European cooperation, and personal development by enabling young people to live and study in another country. Through school or university partnerships, students participate in short-term exchange visits that include joint workshops, cultural activities, and everyday experiences with host peers.
The program strengthens language skills, fosters open-mindedness, and deepens awareness of shared European values such as democracy, diversity, and solidarity. It encourages youth to grow beyond borders and become active, engaged citizens in an interconnected world.
Schüleraustauschprogramme fördern interkulturelles Lernen, europäische Zusammenarbeit und persönliche Entwicklung, indem sie jungen Menschen die Möglichkeit geben, in einem anderen Land zu leben und zu studieren. Im Rahmen von Schul- oder Universitätspartnerschaften nehmen die Schüler an Kurzzeit-Austauschaufenthalten teil, die gemeinsame Workshops, kulturelle Aktivitäten und Alltagserfahrungen mit Gleichaltrigen im Gastland umfassen.
Das Programm stärkt die Sprachkenntnisse, fördert die Aufgeschlossenheit und vertieft das Bewusstsein für gemeinsame europäische Werte wie Demokratie, Vielfalt und Solidarität. Es ermutigt die Jugendlichen, über ihre Grenzen hinauszuwachsen und aktive, engagierte Bürger in einer vernetzten Welt zu werden.

Eyewitness work is dedicated to actively engaging with recent history through the personal accounts of contemporary witnesses. The aim is to bring historical events, social upheavals and everyday life in past decades to life and make them comprehensible based on authentic life stories - especially for future generations.
Zeitzeugenarbeit widmet sich der aktiven Auseinandersetzung mit der jüngeren Geschichte durch die persönlichen Berichte von Zeitzeuginnen und Zeitzeugen. Ziel ist es, historische Ereignisse, gesellschaftliche Umbrüche und Alltagsleben vergangener Jahrzehnte anhand authentischer Lebensgeschichten lebendig und nachvollziehbar zu machen – insbesondere für nachfolgende Generationen.
Danube-Networkers-Online-Lectures (DALEC)
Danube-Networkers-Online-Lectures (DALEC)
DALEC was a “Media Project Old and Young” with the thematic focus on “Values and Paths along the Danube” across five countries. Five scientific lectures were prepared by scientists for lay people, held live to an audience in the respective locations and transmitted over the internet in an online-lecture series. The lectures were discussed face to face and via internet forums nationally and transnationally. The accompanying discussions, therefore, also contributed to a better understanding between old and young. In mini-projects some of the young and old participants worked with different methods based on the topics of the lectures. In the end, more than five mini projects were accomplished and complemented the online-lectures.
DALEC war ein "Medienprojekt Alt und Jung" mit dem thematischen Schwerpunkt "Werte und Wege entlang der Donau" in fünf Ländern. Fünf wissenschaftliche Vorträge wurden von Wissenschaftlern für Laien aufbereitet, live vor Publikum an den jeweiligen Standorten gehalten und in einer Online-Vortragsreihe über das Internet übertragen. Die Vorträge wurden in persönlichen Gesprächen und in Internetforen national und länderübergreifend diskutiert. Die begleitenden Diskussionen trugen somit auch zu einem besseren Verständnis zwischen Alt und Jung bei. In Miniprojekten arbeiteten einige der jungen und alten Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmer mit unterschiedlichen Methoden zu den Themen der Vorträge. Am Ende wurden mehr als fünf Miniprojekte durchgeführt, die die Online-Vorträge ergänzten.

The format “Singing Together Online” was developed during the COVID-19 pandemic as part of the project VIVES-BW.de. At a time when choirs, singing groups, and communal events were no longer possible due to health restrictions, this online format offered a safe, joyful, and accessible alternative — directly from the comfort of one’s home.
Since then, it has evolved into a popular participatory activity, bringing together people of all ages for a cheerful, music-filled evening online. Participants sing well-known folk songs, old-time favorites, and popular tunes — melodies many carry in their hearts. The event is musically accompanied by dedicated musicians and vocalists, live via video.
Das Format "Gemeinsam online singen" wurde während der COVID-19-Pandemie im Rahmen des Projekts VIVES-BW.de entwickelt. Zu einer Zeit, als Chöre, Singgruppen und Gemeinschaftsveranstaltungen aus gesundheitlichen Gründen nicht mehr möglich waren, bot dieses Online-Format eine sichere, fröhliche und zugängliche Alternative - direkt von zu Hause aus.
Seitdem hat es sich zu einer beliebten Mitmach-Aktivität entwickelt, die Menschen aller Altersgruppen zu einem fröhlichen, musikalischen Abend im Internet zusammenbringt. Die Teilnehmer singen bekannte Volkslieder, Old-Time-Favoriten und beliebte Melodien - Melodien, die viele in ihrem Herzen tragen. Musikalisch begleitet wird die Veranstaltung von engagierten Musikern und Sängern, die live per Video zugeschaltet werden.

"Cooking Together" is a digital format first developed within the project of vives-bw.de and now continued internationally through the Danect network. It brings together people of different generations and cultural backgrounds in a virtual setting.
One person demonstrates a simple, everyday recipe from their own kitchen while others cook along at home. Ingredients and shopping lists are shared online in advance. As the meal is prepared, conversations naturally unfold—about the recipe’s origin, regional variations, and related cultural traditions.
Participants then enjoy the meal together online, often raising a glass to shared experiences. The format creates a safe and inclusive space for intergenerational and intercultural dialogue, while also fostering digital skills and reducing social isolation.
"Gemeinsam kochen" ist ein digitales Format, das zunächst im Rahmen des Projekts von vives-bw.de entwickelt wurde und nun durch das Danect-Netzwerk international weitergeführt wird. Es bringt Menschen verschiedener Generationen und kultureller Hintergründe in einer virtuellen Umgebung zusammen.
Eine Person demonstriert ein einfaches, alltägliches Rezept aus ihrer eigenen Küche, während andere zu Hause mitkochen. Die Zutaten und Einkaufslisten werden im Voraus online ausgetauscht. Während der Zubereitung des Gerichts entwickeln sich auf natürliche Weise Gespräche über den Ursprung des Rezepts, regionale Variationen und damit verbundene kulturelle Traditionen. Anschließend genießen die Teilnehmer die Mahlzeit gemeinsam online und stoßen dabei oft mit einem Glas auf die gemeinsamen Erfahrungen an. Das Format schafft einen sicheren und inklusiven Raum für den generationsübergreifenden und interkulturellen Dialog und fördert gleichzeitig die digitalen Fähigkeiten und verringert die soziale Isolation.

The project focuses on educating elderly learners about current economic issues. Danube Stories brings together organizations from different countries and different spheres of activity to work together and exchange best practices in areas such as adult social inclusion and the acquisition of new cultural and / or linguistic skills through formal and informal methods of education and training.
Das Projekt konzentriert sich darauf, ältere Lernende über aktuelle wirtschaftliche Themen aufzuklären. Danube Stories bringt Organisationen aus verschiedenen Ländern und unterschiedlichen Tätigkeitsbereichen zusammen, um zusammenzuarbeiten und bewährte Verfahren in Bereichen wie der sozialen Eingliederung von Erwachsenen und dem Erwerb neuer kultureller und/oder sprachlicher Fähigkeiten durch formelle und informelle Methoden der Bildung und Ausbildung auszutauschen.

@Learn was a multilateral Grundtvig project which united partner organizations from five European countries with the aim of fostering the idea of active ageing and lifelong learning. The project’s goal was to promote an understanding of ageing as an enriching part of the life course and to establish an active aging learning community which raises awareness about and educates on topics like health care, social inclusion, new media and intergenerational solidarity. To reach this, we brought together older adults aged 60+ and younger people aged 16-35 in all partner countries to create a vibrant and rewarding cross-generational learning community.
@Learn war ein multilaterales Grundtvig-Projekt, das Partnerorganisationen aus fünf europäischen Ländern mit dem Ziel zusammenbrachte, die Idee des aktiven Alterns und des lebenslangen Lernens zu fördern. Ziel des Projekts war es, das Verständnis für das Altern als bereichernden Teil des Lebenslaufs zu fördern und eine Lerngemeinschaft für aktives Altern zu schaffen, die das Bewusstsein für Themen wie Gesundheitsversorgung, soziale Eingliederung, neue Medien und Solidarität zwischen den Generationen schärft und darüber aufklärt. Um dies zu erreichen, brachten wir ältere Erwachsene im Alter von 60+ und jüngere Menschen im Alter von 16-35 Jahren in allen Partnerländern zusammen, um eine lebendige und lohnende generationenübergreifende Lerngemeinschaft zu schaffen.

In the European Danube project "Danube Women City Guide", the aim was to raise awareness of the importance of women and their life achievements along the Danube, to network women along the Danube and to strengthen new city tours for women. The project was funded by the Baden-Württemberg Foundation.
Im europäischen Donauprojekt „Danube Women City Guide“ ging es darum, das Bewusstsein für die Bedeutung von Frauen und deren Lebensleistung entlang der Donau zu schärfen, Frauen entlang der Donau zu vernetzen und neue Stadtführungen für Frauen zu stärken. Gefördert wurde das Projekt von der Baden-Württemberg Stiftung.

The Danube Bridge Breakfast was a public two-hour event on a bridge crossing the Danube in Ulm/Neu-Ulm. The educational network “The Danube-Networks” hosted this event with the intention to create the opportunity for the Danube neighbors to get to know each other while tasting bread and small regional delights from the Danube countries. In a relaxed environment, the participants were given the possibility to get to know people from different cultures and backgrounds, to see the diversity within unity in Europe, and to get the feeling of what a peaceful European unity means in real life. The event was open to everyone, free of charge and was part of the International Danube Festival in Ulm.
Das Donaubrückenfrühstück war eine zweistündige öffentliche Veranstaltung auf einer Brücke über die Donau in Ulm/Neu-Ulm. Das Bildungsnetzwerk „The Danube-Networks“ richtete diese Veranstaltung mit der Absicht aus, den Donaunachbarn die Möglichkeit zu geben, sich bei der Verkostung von Brot und kleinen regionalen Köstlichkeiten aus den Donauländern gegenseitig kennenzulernen. In einer entspannten Umgebung hatten die Teilnehmer die Möglichkeit, Menschen aus verschiedenen Kulturen und mit unterschiedlichem Hintergrund kennenzulernen, die Vielfalt innerhalb der Einheit in Europa zu sehen und ein Gefühl dafür zu bekommen, was eine friedliche europäische Einheit im wirklichen Leben bedeutet. Die Veranstaltung war für jedermann zugänglich, kostenlos und fand im Rahmen des Internationalen Donaufestes in Ulm statt.

ViVES@BW: Virtually Connected - Senior Citizens in Baden-Württemberg
VIVES@BW ("Virtually Connected - Senior Citizens in Baden-Württemberg") brings people from the age of three into contact with each other via Zoom. Participants can take part in lectures, hands-on activities, discussions and open meeting places free of charge or organise their own activities. The programme is varied - from mental exercise and breathing techniques to evening lectures - and promotes exchange, community and new contacts. Participation is possible from the comfort of your own home via PC, tablet or smartphone. Individual support is available for technical questions. The aim is to combat loneliness in old age and create cross-generational connections. The project is supported by the state of Baden-Württemberg. One participant put it in a nutshell: "Today, the world comes to my home."
VIVES\@BW („Virtuell verbunden – Seniorinnen & Senioren in Baden-Württemberg“) bringt Menschen ab dem dritten Lebensalter über Zoom miteinander in Kontakt. Teilnehmende können kostenlos an Vorträgen, Mitmachangeboten, Diskussionen und offenen Treffpunkten teilnehmen oder selbst Angebote gestalten. Das Programm ist vielfältig – von Denksport über Atemtechniken bis zum Abendvortrag – und fördert Austausch, Gemeinschaft und neue Kontakte. Die Teilnahme ist bequem von zu Hause per PC, Tablet oder Smartphone möglich. Für technische Fragen gibt es individuelle Unterstützung. Ziel ist es, Einsamkeit im Alter zu begegnen und generationenübergreifende Verbindungen zu schaffen. Das Projekt wird vom Land Baden-Württemberg unterstützt. Eine Teilnehmerin brachte es auf den Punkt: „Heute kommt die Welt zu mir nach Hause.“

Panchine rosse - Red benches as powerful symbols against violence against women
Panchine Rosse (red benches) are a social and artistic project from Italy that draws attention to violence against women and femicide. They have been placed in public places since 2014 and their red colour symbolises the empty space of a woman who has died as a result of violence. The first bench was designed in Turin by artist Karim Cherif in cooperation with Acmos. It often contains eye motifs, slogans against violence and references to the Italian hotline 1522. The benches are ‘civil monuments’ and are intended to promote awareness and solidarity, especially among young people. Today, they can be found in many Italian and European cities. They have become an international symbol against gender-based violence and serve as a reminder: Violence against women is an omnipresent social problem.
Panchine Rosse (rote Bänke) sind ein gesellschaftliches und künstlerisches Projekt aus Italien, das auf Gewalt gegen Frauen und Femizide aufmerksam macht. Seit 2014 werden sie an öffentlichen Orten aufgestellt und symbolisieren durch ihre rote Farbe den leeren Platz einer Frau, die durch Gewalt ums Leben kam. Die erste Bank wurde in Turin vom Künstler Karim Cherif in Kooperation mit Acmos gestaltet. Sie enthält oft Augenmotive, Sprüche gegen Gewalt und Hinweise auf die italienische Hotline 1522. Die Bänke sind „zivile Denkmäler“ und sollen das Bewusstsein und Solidarität, besonders auch bei jungen Menschen, fördern. Heute stehen sie in vielen Städten Italiens und Europas. Sie sind zu einem internationalen Symbol gegen geschlechtsspezifische Gewalt geworden und mahnen: Gewalt gegen Frauen ist ein allgegenwärtiges gesellschaftliches Problem.

"Music connects. A musical journey through diversity"
On 9 June 2020, ILEU Ukrainehilfe and ROXY hosted the event ‘Music unites - a musical journey through diversity’ as part of the 1st Ulm Diversity Week. Musicians, singers and dancers from various countries of origin gave impressive insights into their cultures. They included the Ukrainian choir Stefania, artists from the Iranian community, the Turkish choir of the HDB, the Chinese Bailing Choir of the CVS, dancers from the Ege Dance and Culture Association, a duo from the Philippinos in Ulm and the Ulm Pop Choir. A special moment was the joint singing of the European anthem with current lyrics by Dorothea Müller. The school band of the FOS/BOS Neu-Ulm rounded off the evening in an atmospheric way. The concert showed the cultural diversity of our city and was characterised by friendship, openness and the desire for peace.
Am 09.06.2024 luden die Ukrainehilfe des ILEU und das ROXY zur Veranstaltung „Musik verbindet – Eine musikalische Reise durch die Vielfalt“ im Rahmen der 1. Ulmer Vielfaltswoche ein. Musiker:innen, Sänger:innen und Tänzer:innen aus verschiedenen Herkunftsländern gaben eindrucksvolle Einblicke in ihre Kulturen. Mit dabei waren u. a. der ukrainische Chor Stefania, Künstler:innen aus der iranischen Community, der türkische Chor des HDB, der chinesische Bailing-Chor des CVS, Tänzer des Ege Tanz- und Kulturvereins, ein Duo der Philippinos in Ulm und der Ulmer Popchor. Ein besonderer Moment war das gemeinsame Singen der Europahymne mit aktuellem Text von Dorothea Müller. Die Schulband der FOS/BOS Neu-Ulm rundete den Abend stimmungsvoll ab. Das Konzert zeigte die kulturelle Vielfalt unserer Stadt und war getragen von Freundschaft, Offenheit und dem Wunsch nach Frieden.

Urban gardening refers to gardening in the city, usually on small areas such as balconies, roofs, backyards or community gardens. The aim is to grow fruit, vegetables, herbs or flowers yourself and to green urban spaces. This is often done collectively, which strengthens neighbourliness and social interaction. Urban gardening promotes sustainability, environmental awareness and the local supply of fresh food. At the same time, it improves the urban climate, creates habitats for animals and makes cities more liveable. The movement is a creative approach to making cities greener, more social and more sustainable.
Urban Gardening bezeichnet das Gärtnern in der Stadt, meist auf kleinen Flächen wie Balkonen, Dächern, Hinterhöfen oder Gemeinschaftsgärten. Ziel ist es, Obst, Gemüse, Kräuter oder Blumen selbst anzubauen und städtische Räume zu begrünen. Oft geschieht dies gemeinschaftlich, wodurch Nachbarschaft und soziales Miteinander gestärkt werden. Urban Gardening fördert Nachhaltigkeit, Umweltbewusstsein und die lokale Versorgung mit frischen Lebensmitteln. Gleichzeitig verbessert es das Stadtklima, schafft Lebensräume für Tiere und macht Städte lebenswerter. Die Bewegung ist ein kreativer Ansatz, um Städte grüner, sozialer und zukunftsfähiger zu gestalten.

IdE – Integration durch Engagement
The pilot project ‘Integration through Engagement’ (3 courses) aimed to provide Ukrainian refugees with theoretical and practical insights into civic engagement in Germany in an eight-week course. The participants took part in weekly face-to-face and online sessions in which they worked out their interests, learned about the framework conditions for volunteering and prepared for contacts with organisations. They practised introducing themselves orally and in writing in German and were given the opportunity to spend several hours shadowing in a social organisation. They reflected on their experiences together, were introduced to volunteering platforms and prepared for the realisation of their own small voluntary activity. The aim was to strengthen motivation and self-confidence for future volunteering. The project was funded by the Partnership for Democracy in Ulm as part of the federal ‘Live Democracy!’ programme.
Das Pilotprojekt „Integration durch Engagement“ (3 Kurse) hatte das Ziel, ukrainischen Geflüchteten in einem achtwöchigen Kurs theoretische und praktische Einblicke in das bürgerschaftliche Engagement in Deutschland zu vermitteln. Die TN nahmen an wöchentlichen Präsenz- und Online-Sitzungen teil, in denen sie ihre Interessen herausarbeiteten, Rahmenbedingungen für freiwilliges Engagement kennenlernten und sich auf Kontakte mit Organisationen vorbereiteten. Sie übten, sich mündlich und schriftlich in deutscher Sprache vorzustellen, und erhielten die Möglichkeit zu einer mehrstündigen Hospitation in einer sozialen Einrichtung. Erfahrungen wurden gemeinsam reflektiert, Ehrenamtsplattformen vorgestellt und die Umsetzung einer eigenen kleinen freiwilligen Tätigkeit vorbereitet. Ziel war es, Motivation und Selbstvertrauen für zukünftiges Engagement zu stärken. Das Projekt wurde von der Partnerschaft für Demokratie in Ulm im Rahmen des Bundesprogramms „Demokratie leben!“ gefördert.

The dance café at ROXY is a regular, open meeting format organised by the association ILEU e.V. as part of the Ukraine Aid ‘Together in Ulm’. It is primarily aimed at Ukrainian refugees, but is open to all people - regardless of age or origin - who enjoy music, dance and socialising. Childcare is available.
Performances by Ukrainian and local artists as well as the Ukrainian choir ‘Stefania’ provide cultural highlights. In a relaxed atmosphere with coffee, tea and cakes, a place of community and exchange is created. There
The venue is ROXY, a lively cultural centre in the heart of Ulm, which combines concerts, cinema, theatre and numerous other cultural activities. The dance café is organised jointly by Ukrainian and German volunteers - with the active support of ILEU e.V.
Das Tanzcafé im ROXY ist ein regelmäßig stattfindendes, offenes Begegnungsformat, das vom Verein ILEU e.V. im Rahmen der Ukrainehilfe „Zusammen in Ulm“ organisiert wird. Es richtet sich in erster Linie an geflüchtete Ukrainer:innen, steht aber allen Menschen – unabhängig von Alter oder Herkunft – offen, die Freude an Musik, Tanz und Begegnung haben.
Für kulturelle Highlights sorgen Auftritte ukrainischer und einheimischer Künstlerinnen sowie des ukrainischen Chors „Stefania“. In entspannter Atmosphäre bei Kaffee, Tee und Kuchen entsteht ein Ort der Gemeinschaft und des Austauschs. Es gibt u.a. Kinderbetreuung.
Veranstaltungsort ist das ROXY, ein lebendiges Kulturzentrum im Herzen von Ulm, das Konzerte, Kino, Theater und zahlreiche weitere Kulturangebote vereint. Organisiert wird das Tanzcafé gemeinschaftlich von ukrainischen und deutschen Freiwilligen – mit tatkräftiger Unterstützung von ILEU e.V.

Kirchen- oder Pfarrgemeinderäte in den evangelischen und katholischen Kirchen Deutschlands sind demokratisch gewählte Gremien, die eine zentrale Rolle in der Selbstverwaltung der Kirchengemeinden spielen. Gemeinsam mit dem Pfarrer treffen sie Entscheidungen zu geistlichen, organisatorischen und finanziellen Fragen und fördern Beteiligung, Talententwicklung und die Arbeit von Gruppen innerhalb der Gemeinde. The website presents personal stories of Ukrainians who came to Germany as a result of war and flight. Created as part of the ‘Together in Ulm’ initiative by ILEU e.V., the platform offers insights into individual experiences as well as the history, culture and traditions of Ukraine. This is complemented by an interactive map that shows the storytellers' places of origin, as well as the radio group ‘Voices of Ukraine’, which broadcasts monthly on Radio free FM. The website invites people to share their own stories and promote intercultural dialogue.
Die Webseite präsentiert persönliche Geschichten von Ukrainer:innen, die aufgrund von Krieg und Flucht nach Deutschland kamen. Entstanden im Rahmen der Initiative „Zusammen in Ulm“ von ILEU e.V., bietet die Plattform Einblicke in individuelle Erfahrungen, aber auch die Geschichte, Kultur und Traditionen der Ukraine. Older students studying architecture at Slovenian Third Age University entailed a researh study into public toilets in the Ljubljana's city centre. ( within the Dreamlike Neighbourhood project) . Their aim was to make a map of the ones accessible to older people and contribute their findings to urbanists, architects as well as decision makers.They presented their findings in civil dialogues.
Člani in članice študijskega krožka Trgi, ulice in stavbe okoli nas na Slovenski univerzi za tretje življenjsko obdobje so preučevali položaj in. dostopnost javnih stranišč za starejše (znotraj projekta Sanjska soseska) Hoteli so opozoriti na prostorske komptence starejših in potrebo, da se jih upošteva. Izdelali so zemljevid javnih stranišč. Sodelovali so v dialogu državljanov.

The map works similar to Wikipedia: Anyone can contribute and mark public places around the world according to their wheelchair accessibility. The Wheelmap is a participatory project! It thrives on as many people as possible rating places or getting involved in other ways. Wheelmap.org is a project of SOZIALHELDEN e.V. (located in Berlin, Germany). The association aims to sensitize people to social problems and encourage them to rethink. The SOZIALHELDEN have been on this mission since 2004.

The Week of Remembrance and Unity includes a series of school activities aimed at paying tribute to the victims of the crimes that occurred in 2023 at the Vladislav Ribnikar Elementary School in Belgrade, Dubona, Mali Orašje, and Niška Banja, when the lives of young people were tragically taken. The purpose of the Week of Remembrance and Unity is at the same time support for the families and friends of the tragic victims, as well as raising awareness in the school and wider social community about the importance of preventing violence among young people and affirming camaraderie, understanding, humanity, empathy, tolerance, respect and dialogue among young people.
Недеља сећања и заједништва обухвата низ школских активности које имају за циљ одавање поштовања жртвама злочина који су се догодили 2023. године у Огледној основној школи „Владислав Рибникар“ у Београду, у Дубони, Малом Орашју и Нишкој Бањи када су се трагично угасили животи младих људи. Циљ Недеље сећања и заједништва истовремено је и подршка породицама и пријатељима трагично настрадалих, као и подизање свести у школској и широј друштвеној заједници о значају превенције насиља међу младима и афирмације другарства, разумевања, хуманости, емпатије, толеранције, поштовања и дијалога међу младима.

People of all ages, ethnic origins and social backgrounds were invited to bake bread in groups and send photos of their actions, making a concrete contribution to the promotion of a peaceful and solidary community in the Danube region and in Europe.

In 2024, young and older people from the Danube countries came together—both digitally and in person—to discuss current social issues. Through two international online workshops and one in-person workshop, participants received input on various social, economic, and political topics. The aim was to foster controversial yet respectful dialogue, which is essential for a vibrant democracy.

The wanted danube
Crocheting a simple woolen handmade band
In November 2013, people from across the Danube region crochet a simple woolen handmade band, aiming to make it as long as the Danube River itself. This initiative was intended as a symbol of a desired Danube community, demonstrating unity and solidarity among the countries along the danube river. The band was created in several stages and ultimately transformed into an art object, which was presented at the Danube Festival on July 13, 2014, at the cathedral square (Münsterplatz) in Ulm.

Green neighborhoods, a safer city
More organizations in informal initiative groups such as Inelul Verde Metropolitan, Someșul nostru, Clubul de Cicloturism Napoca, Umbrela Verde, Natura Transilvaniei and Alergători începători Cluj have organized regular walks ( marches) and guided tours in the internationally renowned Hoia-Baciu forest. These were events that gathered around them people concerned and eager to protect this famous forest and the surrounding meadows. At the same time, on these occasions, a wide-ranging approach was made, namely the transformation of this area into a natural protected area, despite the increase in monitored traffic.
And about our endeavors, I was overjoyed when I received an e-mail from the Cluj N City Hall informing me about the outcome of our requests related to the protection of the Hoia Baciu forest, which I present in the following lines:
“Regarding your proposal to allocate in the 2025 budget a sum of money for the protection of the Hoia-Cheile Baciului area, as part of a future metropolitan green ring, we inform you that the Local Council meeting of March 27, 2025 voted the budget of Cluj-Napoca Municipality for 2025, and the amount of 1. 000.000.000 lei.”
In conclusion, it is important to get involved in solving problems in our community, even if our effort is like a drop of water in an ocean. So even small drops ultimately contribute to change for the better.

The Stolpersteine (Stumbling Blocks) are 10x10x10 cm in size. The artist Gunter Demnig
launched the Stumbling Blocks project in 1992 by laying the first stone. It was intended to
cherish the memory of all the victims of the Nazi regime: Jews, Sinti and Roma, homosexuals,
those politically persecuted, Jehovah’s Witnesses and euthanasia victims. The names on the
Stumbling Blocks were meant to return personality and dignity to the people who had been
reduced to numbers. A conscious pause at the Block with the inscription is a “stumbling with the
head and the heart”. Today, the Stumbling Blocks are held in high esteem. 75 000 have already
been laid in Germany and in 25 other European countries. They form the world’s largest
decentralised memorial, increasingly becoming a community issue in cities and towns. Every
year on the 9th of November, the date of the Kristallnacht of 1938, people gather to clean and
polish the metal plaques so that the names of the victims of National Socialism remain legible. It
is a reminder in the present times, when new signs of violence, contempt for humanity and anti-
Semitism are reappearing.
