In the European Danube project “Danube Women City Guide”, the aim was to raise awareness of the importance of women and their life achievements along the Danube, to network women along the Danube and to strengthen new city tours for women. The project was funded by the Baden-Württemberg Foundation.

Im europäischen Donauprojekt „Danube Women City Guide“ ging es darum, das Bewusstsein für die Bedeutung von Frauen und deren Lebensleistung entlang der Donau zu schärfen, Frauen entlang der Donau zu vernetzen und neue Stadtführungen für Frauen zu stärken. Travelling exhibition with / about women in the respective cities along the Danube (Ulm, Vienna, Budapest, Timisoara, Novi Sad) – Paperback “Danube Women Stories”, contains short biographies and interviews of women in the respective cities (Ulm, Vienna, Budapest, Timisoara, Novi Sad): 50 stories about interesting, fascinating and clever women who play an important role in public life and the societies along the Danube. – Women city guide.

Aim
The aim of the project was to raise awareness of the importance of women and their life achievements along the Danube. In addition, the transnational exchange on current and historical women’s issues in the Danube region was strengthened. The project thus made a contribution to the implementation of the European Danube Region Strategy. In particular, it was intended to network and connect young women from the Danube basin by gathering knowledge about the historical and current significance of women in different cities along the Danube. In intergenerational activities, an awareness of their performance was thus created.

What is needed

Partner meeting: Develop measures for the locations and further develop the criteria/indicators.

Local women’s city tours: situation analysis and clarification of development perspectives; city guides provided expertise on the project and discussed the most important building blocks for a successful city tour; networking and, alternatively, further development of the concept of “women’s city tours”.

The project partners worked with various target groups (pupils, students, journalists) to develop historical and contemporary women’s biographies in project work. These formed the basis for the pocket-sized city guide.

The project results were distributed via the website, press releases and public activities, in particular on International Women’s Day. Different focal points were set at the locations, bookmarks were published (Vienna, Temesware), virtual guided tours of the women’s city (Ulm) and various guided tours of the women’s city (Budapest) were offered.

Continuous :
Monthly exchange via Skype/ adobe connect: Networking between the partners took place via virtual meetings, conferences and on-site networking.

Final meeting in Ulm during the Donaufest 2018: Presentation of the paperback and the exhibition (in the Ulm Museum) as well as internal exchange of the partners about the results and the implementation of the project.

Pupils of the Anna-Essinger-Gymnasium in Ulm reflected on gender roles and stereotypes (in private and professional lives) in the context of art lessons.

The results were presented in a photo exhibition at the University of Ulm as part of the Spring Academy. The pupils led the participants of the Spring Academy through the exhibition and explained their photos. The pupils were able to talk about the professional and role models of men and women with the participants of the Spring Academy, who were all about the same age as their grandparents. In this way, young and old were able to learn more about the perspectives of other generations.

Treasure hunt

The playful transfer of knowledge about the women of Ulm is the main focus here. With the help of a mobile app, the interest of women and men of different ages in the contribution of historical and contemporary women is to be awakened. At various locations in the city centre of Ulm there are memorial steles which point to the outstanding achievements of the women of Ulm. These are part of the rally, which we have contested with a tablet or a smartphone. There is a quiz question for each of these steles. The answer can be found on the information boards. Two attempts are possible in order to find the correct answer – then the question is resolved. In addition, there are five starlet tasks for the city of Ulm.
