Short Description

Parish or congregational councils in German Protestant and Catholic churches are democratically elected bodies that play a key role in the self-governance of church communities. They work alongside pastors to make decisions on spiritual, organizational, and financial matters, and encourage participation, talent development, and group support within the congregation. These councils promote democratic values such as pluralism and civic responsibility, and may also take a public stand on societal and political issues like racism or threats to democracy.

Goals

Parish or congregational councils are key democratic bodies in Protestant and Catholic churches in Germany. Elected by church members, they represent diverse views and serve for 4 or 5 years. Their role is to take responsibility for the congregation, make decisions, encourage participation and talent development, and support various church groups. They promote self-governance, co-creation, and active community involvement.

What is needed

The parish council utilises the premises and resources of the parish. Most activities are carried out on a voluntary and unpaid basis. The financial resources come from the assets of the parish or are provided by the overall parish or diocese.
However, events can also be organised throughout the city or in other parishes as joint projects.
Furthermore, fundraising campaigns can also be organised, especially for charitable projects.
